Map Review - part 2

A few days ago I asked some of my Twitter friends to compare 2 versions of a map I'm composing for one of my clients. Since then, my clients graphics person has come back with a few suggestions. The original map is shown here:

And the modifications suggested by the graphics person is here:

Image004

I'm curious what you all might think of these changes. There are some that I really like, others that I don't or not sure about. I'll be discussing the changes with the client later today. If you care to comment, just leave a note here, or on Twitter.

Thanks!

Now that I have these uploaded, I don't think they're large enough to be usefull. I'll see if I can correct this somehow :-(

Plane Over Arches

I was checking out the new GeoEye imagery in Google Earth today. I'm heading out to Colorado and Utah in a couple of weeks, so I started searching around that area and noticed something peculiar. It looks like GeoEye caght an image of a plane traveling over Arches National Park at the same time it was taking images of the area.

Here's how you can check it out for yourself:

  • Open Google Earth
  • Under Layers, expand the More folder and check Geo Eye Featured Imagery
  • Zoom in to Arches National Park (use the search box)
  • Zoom out or pan around until you see the GeoEye icon and click on it
  • Click on the View Full Resolution Image button
  • Then load this KMZ file >

I'm curious what caused the multi-color plane shaped artifact. Any remote sensing gurus care to explain?

Thanks

Addendum 2010-06-22:
In case you can't access the GeoEye imagery in GE, here's a screen capture taken by Brett McLean (@GISBrett). Thanks Brett, for posting this via Twitter.

The best music video I've ever seen in my life

This is not hyperbole. Although I have been known to exaggerate from time to time (usually to push somebody's buttons in order to get a reaction :-) this is not one of those times.

For the past year, I've been working as a planning consultant for the town of Bethel. This, plus the fact I'm really stuck in the 60's and 70's when it comes to my musical preferences, led me to this incredible video showing the entire Jimi Hendrix set at Woodstock in 1969. I've always liked Hendrix. However, after watching this video, my appreciation of his talent has risen to a new level. Awesome? Incredible? Amazing? Extraordinary? Outstanding? What's the word I'm looking for? - Spiritual maybe? Words really can't describe my reaction to this show. The only way to really understand it is to take a few minutes, and experience it for yourself.

I haven't figured out how to resize the embedded GooglePlayer, so if you want to view it in full screen (and you should) please go to:
Jimi Henrix- Live at Woodstock '69

I've always been one of those "Hendrix is probably the greatest guitar player of all time" people. After seeing this video, there is now no doubt in my mind that he was, and still is.

And one final note - yes, he DOES play the guitar with his teeth on this video. (~10 minutes in)

NYS GIS website redesign RFP

I've been looking for a way to use this posterous tool, so I thought I'd give this a try. Here's an email I received today, for a website redesign job. If anyone's interested, please contact Bruce Oswald.

The New York State Geographic Information Systems Association is soliciting proposals from experienced web site design firms to re-design and develop a new web site for the Association (http://www.nysgis.org/).  Please refer to the three attachments which include the RFP, Appendix A - Web Site Scope of Work and Appendix B - Web Site Layout.  This will be a concept to completion production.

The primary reason for the redesign is to better serve the membership of the NYS GIS Association by making the site easier and more efficient to navigate. In addition, as the site is updated by volunteers from the Association, it needs to provide secure remote access for content providers for easier and more efficient updating to keep the site more relevant and current.  Finally, the overall graphics/design of this site must be representative of the cutting edge technology that geospatial information represents.

The Association welcomes proposals from all qualified vendors and, particularly, wishes to encourage vendors residing with New York State to provide proposals.

Award of the contract resulting from this RFP will be based upon the most responsive Vendor whose offer will be the most advantageous to the Association in terms of cost, functionality, and other factors as specified in the RFP.

If you know of any web site design firm that you feel would meet the Association's needs, we'd appreciate it if you would forward this to them for their review.

Thanks,
Bruce
